There are about 80 species of conebushes, all from South Africa.
They are evergreen, mostly shrubs 1 to 3 m high with some trees to 16 m.
The simple, spirally arranged leaves are elliptical or linear.
They are green to red and have a waxy bloom or soft hairs.
Plants are either male or female with cone-like terminal inflorescences.
There is a basal whorl of red, yellow or orange involucral bracts.
The small flowers are typical of the Proteaceae.
