Panus fasciatus.
Fungi > Division Basidiomycota > Class Agaricomycetes > Order Polyporales > Family Panaceae.
Polyporales (with pores) has a few Agaric type fungi (with gills), mostly in the Lentinus (Panus) genus.
The Panus genus has over 10 species.
Panus fasciatus, the Hairy trumpet is also known as Lentinus fasciatus.
Living on decaying wood they have a cylindrical stem 2 to 3 cm high.
The stem is covered in dense brown hairs or bristles.
Young caps are convex, older ones are flat with the edge rolled under.
Mature caps, up to 5 cm across are funnel-shaped often with a deep central depression.
The pale brown surface is covered with dense scales made of tightly packed stiff darker brown hairs.
The fairly close purple then brown gills run a short way down the stem.
The gills fork and there may be shorter gills (lamellulae).
The spore print is white.
